Spring cleaning checklist: How to clean your garage cabinets

It's almost that time of year again, and we'd guess that you've probably added your garage to your spring cleaning list. When was the last time you took a peek inside you garage cabinets, though? Dust and grime can collect over months (or years), and giving them a good scrub is often an important move toward getting your garage in order. This is your cabinets' moment to shine, though, so get ready - it's time to clean house.

Clear it all out

First things first: You'll need to take everything out of your garage cabinets so you can truly start from scratch. We know that might sound daunting, but it's the most crucial step of the whole process. You can't really roll up your sleeves and revamp your garage cabinets if you're just shuffling your stuff around. We know - we've tried it too.

Sort through your stuff

After you've gotten everything out of your garage cabinets, you'll want to begin grouping similar items. You should put all your gardening tools together, for example, and carve out a corner to stash your sports equipment. This will help when it's time to put everything back (in a good home, we hope).

Out with the old, in with the new

Once your piles are all arranged, start sifting through them. When was the last time you used an item? If it's been over a year, then say sayonara. It may be tempting to hold onto unused items just in case, but it's unlikely you'll use them again after such a long stretch. When you're done purging your possessions, you should have significantly smaller, well-grouped piles.

Get rid of the grime

Next up: cleaning the interior of your actual cabinets. All you'll need is a little all-purpose cleaner, a damp rag and a little elbow grease. Once you wipe out all the dirt, give your cabinets an hour or two to dry. You're almost done!

Give everything a home

Your cabinets are as good as new, you've sorted through your possessions and eliminated all the extraneous clutter. What now? All you've got to do is match up your piles with a good area of your garage organization system. Finding the right home for all your stuff can be a little like putting together a puzzle from scratch, but it's well worth the effort.

Don't forget to label

After everything has been put in its place, there's one more step: Label all of the boxes and bins inside your cabinets and on your shelves. It will help immensely the next time you're searching for that Phillips screwdriver and save you a whole lot of time.

That's all there is to it! It's not a massive project or home renovation, but it will leave you feeling organized and fresh as spring rolls around. Keeping your garage clean will also help prolong the life of most of your tools and equipment - it's a step you don't want to skip!
