Ever wonder why so many garage organization projects fail? While we may never understand the true answer to garage organizational failure, we can take a few guesses. Here’s one theory boiled down in unscientific terms:
When most homeowners start to organize their garages, they realize that they have so much stuff and not enough space to store it in. Even if you’ve adopted minimalist, slash-and-burn tactics to throw everything way that you possibly can, you may realize that you still don’t have to space to keep everything you want.
Consider installing extra garage storage space. You don’t have to be a skilled carpenter, and you don’t have to pay a fortune. Garage cabinets, shelving, and storage bins are affordable and easier to install than you might think. But first, take into account all the extra space at your disposal for wall storage. Also, decide where you can install hooks, shelves, and cabinets.
If you’ve created a plan for organizing your garage, taken inventory of everything you own, and you’re still lost, go online and look at some of the garage organizational systems people have installed. A little inspiration and some ingenuity can go a long way when it comes to organizing your garage.

So you’ve decided to organize your garage. Keep in mind that you can substitute any other part of your home for “garage” here. We’ll just refer to “garage organization” for simplicity’s sake.
So you’ve rolled up your sleeves, visited flowwall.com and looked at our planning guide, and you’ve got all the motivation in the world. But all of the sudden you realized there’s a lot of stuff in there! You’ve probably got mountains of tools, boxes of hand-me-downs, half a dozen cabinets fool of who knows what, and a pile of bikes, toys, and lawn gear.
Don’t panic. Don’t hide under your bed.
One of the simplest ways to fight garage organizational fear is to take inventory (after you’ve taken several deep, relaxing breaths). Actually finding out what you have inside your garage is the best way to start organizing it. Find a pad of paper and write down how many bikes you own, how many power drills you have (and how many you need). You’re going to have to find storage solutions for everything cluttering your garage, and it’s best to know what you have in order to find out what you’re going to need.

Garage organization—any organizing for that matter—can seem a little daunting. Okay, let’s face it—it IS daunting. Most people spend a few years accumulating a life’s worth of stuff, and then in a moment of inspiration we decide to clean it all up, de-clutter our lives, and use that much needed garage space for nobler ambitions (like actually using it to park our cars in). But we get discouraged when we realize that garage organization is a bigger task than we want it to be.
While garage organization isn’t ever easy, it’s extremely rewarding. The trick is making a plan and knowing (believe it or not) where to start planning. Consider visiting www.flowwall.com before you begin. We’ve compiled a handy guide to help you start any garage organization project. You can download it for free. Use it to sketch your garage, make a list of the garage storage items you might need along with any wall storage you could use.
Like any major project, getting started is half the battle. Fortunately you’ve got a whole bunch of people at Flow Wall who are absolutely crazy (we’ve learned to accept this) about garage organization, and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Labeling is like the icing on the garage organizational cake. But even if your garage isn’t the organized paradise you’d like it to be, you can still implement labeling into your garage storage at any stage.
Labeling requires thought and strategy to what garage storage is being put where. But it is not the first step in garage organization.
You must first divide your garage storage into logical categories. Organize these how you would like: on shelves, up the wall, in storage bins, etc. Once your things have been divided and logically placed; get to labeling areas like sports, camping, shoes, toys, holiday, etc.
Wall storage will be best benefited by labeling. If your walls are lined with shelves, organize each self methodically, and then label accordingly. It may seem simple, but it will require you to put more thought into your garage storage. Putting more thought into your garage storage will naturally create better storage that will remain in tact for longer.

This is one of the latest installs from one of our great customers! Check out what he had to say.
“Both my wife and I are very happy with the final product, both appearance and utility. I was happy with the way it went together as well. FYI, I did all the work myself. I’m sure it would be easier for two, but I’m proof that one person can do it alone. By the way, I’ve had little experience in such things and don’t even own power tools. I had to buy most of the tools I used for this project, including a drill, stud finder, and oscillating saw. The instructional videos on your website were incredibly helpful and helped me avoid some certain pitfalls. ” Mike
